Kent Harlan: Sandra, you have plenty of dentists in your career consulted. Do you think dental schools this task a reasonable period of training of dentists in the area of money management?
Sandra Simmons: No, unfortunately, money management is taught in any school. The owner of the clinic, there may be a short course on accounting, but accounting is not the cash management and planning money management. There is a big difference between the two.
The only thing to do an accounting program can do is tell you what happened in the past – how much money came from and where it was issued, so that if a practice is the owner how much it cost to pay and to compare the bills to pay, and that the income they provide, then they will actually have an objective break. As costs rise, they tend to start losing money. Then they just pay the bills as they are so in essence, controls the flow of cash for the dentist, the dentist rather than to control cash flow.
